California native
Herbert Gunn (1921-1999), who also acted under the name of
Gordon McDonald, was another newcomer playing service men in Hollywood WWII fare, including a preparedness short of a lightly different kind entitled, enterprisingly,
SEX HYGIENE (1942). Later Gunn worked for the Mann cinema organization and ran a movie emporium in San Luis Obispo, CA.
That "movie emporium" is the Fremont Theater. Mann operated it during the 1980s and early '90s, when I had the privilege of working for Mr. Gunn. The Fremont, a lovely Art Deco venue that opened in May 1942, now frequently hosts live acts.
ReplyDeleteI worked for Mr. Gunn at the Fox Theatre in Bakersfield in the 1970's. He didn't seem to talk too much about his movie career, but I do remember that his office had many pictures and things from the 1940's
ReplyDeleteI worked for Mr. Gunn at The Fremont Theatre in SLO. He was a kind, quiet, gentle soul. I will always think of him with great fondness. RIP Mr. Gunn.
